The Alex Saraceno x Danny Gomez Boutique Brand joins forces with Warm Audio - to deliver more accessible, compact and pedalboard-friendly versions of 3 of its best loved pedals - the Ball Buster Boost, Preamp / Overdrive, and Afro Fuzz. The 1590BB Dirty Boy originals go for $349 each. So there are significant savings here for your wallet, as well as your pedalboard real-estate.

It would be interesting to see a component breakdown here - as the originals feature high fidelity primo components, including vintage Germanium Transistors in the Afro Fuzz. Would be interesting to know where compromises have been made.

Presumably these are SMT circuits - so the $170 / £170 price tag is not really fully affordable territory - sure it’s more affordable than the Dirty Boy originals, while I feel you can get better quality independent boutique pedals for the same price or less! Often with better components and more traditional hand-made construction.

I’m not against bringing expensive pedals to the masses, while the Scandinavian side of me wants to see the numbers / calculations and overall ingredients lists here - so I can properly evaluate the worth and value of these pedals - and decide what their degree of appeal is!

I always felt that for their price range - the Dirty Boy pedals could have had more refined finishing and aesthetics. I believe they deliberately try to evoke a sort of DIY Pedal aesthetic - while there’s often a thin line between artistry and artifice. For sure I admire much about Danny Gomez, but for whatever reason - I’ve not yet quite gelled with the Dirty Boy Brand / Aesthetics / Pedals.

I picked up another earlier Danny Gomez pedal - the Massive Unity 1964 TAE Preamp back in 2018 - and I didn’t get on with that pedal at all - it didn’t seem to have the vibrancy of a Vox Amp, not the range, and was decidedly underpowered for my preferences. I still hold onto that device as a cautionary tale and a warning for me to do more due diligence (It was an impulse buy at the 2018 Birmingham Guitar Show!). Perhaps it just doesn’t work well with clean pedal platforms - that is for sure sometimes the case. But said experience didn’t exactly endear me to the what followed on from there!

I’m slightly ambivalent about Dirty Boy pedals so far - I feel I can get better for less, and more to my preferences. These Dirty Boy Jr pedals are for sure a more suitable format for me - but I’m not yet convinced that these are entirely right for me!

This Warm Audio Jr series is obviously diminished to some degree from those originals - it doesn’t make sense to make exactly equivalent sounding and feeling pedals - smaller, and for half the price of the flagship originals. So I’m a little cynical here. Is this genuinely altruistic - or is it more like a Michael Kors outlet bag - which looks like you’re getting a high street classic at bargain prices - while a closer look reveals those are not the same bags at all - they look very similar from a distance - while up close they deploy cheaper materials and assembly, and forego many of the design details of the originals (inner lining pockets etc.) - you’re actually paying over the odds for a cheaper inferior bag - and those are actually less good value than the dearer high street originals!

The whole outlet system has been abused by the American brands from the start - for European brands you were buying genuine - end of season / end of line bargains - but then Michael Kors and others started making cheaper shittier Outlet Lines - solely to be fake-discounted in outlets - to con consumers into buying cheap facsimiles of their own classic bags! This is why I tend to steer clear of outlet shopping - as most of the time you don’t really know what you’re buying! Where I would classify some of those as being tantamount to officially authorised fakes!

I sometimes get the same feeling with Pedal Collaboration Roll-outs. And I’m always a little cynical when it comes to Warm Audio - who often make claims which cannot later be fully substantiated - including the authenticity of some of their components. (Warm Bender!)

I’m always interested in authenticity and transparency - and there’s not seemingly too much of that here - overall a little opaque on the details. The marketing talks a good game - but all the proper little details are noticeably absent!

I got a little excited for a moment that you would be able to get a Germanium Afro Fuzz for just $170 / £170 - but that doesn’t seem to be the case - the blurb makes no mention of the components used - or how they managed to replicate that hairy / aggressive / textured fuzz with silicon SMT parts.

As an exercise it’s quite nicely done - those are relatively attractive pedals - and I don’t mind those knobs at all. But the actual circuit details are very scant here - I’m interested in the journey of converting those primo-components originals into mass-manufactured SMT types. I want to know the provenance and process here - which remains occluded.

Like I said - the Fuzz has the most appeal for me - but without the bona fides - it’s still something of an outlier.

The excitement curve did blip briefly - but it flatlined pretty quickly too after some initial enthusiasm. I’m just not entirely convinced about the honesty of this endeavour. Is it about bringing more affordable pedals to the masses - or is it just a quick cash-in and money-grab. I remain to be convinced in any case. I still remain open-minded, and open to persuasion, but right here and now I’m just suspicious of this whole endeavour - as I would be if it was carried out by Uli Behringer’s outfit too!

Curve Control - Selects the modulation waveform used by the Drift section. The four available shapes are Sine, Reverse Saw, Square, and Random. Each waveform changes the way the delay time moves and gives the modulation a different personality.
Drift Range - Selects one of three modulation speed and depth ranges: Light, Medium, or Heavy. Light is the place to start for subtle movement. Medium makes the modulation more obvious. Heavy is where the pedal begins to sound unstable, seasick, mechanical, or wonderfully broken.

Highlights from the 2026 Brighton Guitar Show and FX Expo at Brighton Racecourse

This post has been a long time in the making - 3 days solid - with just a few hours of sleep overnight! I feel it might be my best coverage yet - for a nigh perfect show.

This time around pretty much everything went of perfectly - I was out the door very early in the morning - and at the Brighton Racecourse by 07:45! Phil had set up his Pedal Patch stand the night before - as had Paul from Flattley Pedals, and my good friends Wub from Ritual Devices and Rob from Timber Tones has just recently arrived and were setting up their stands.

Someone had also dropped off the necessary Boss pedals - while the Boss Crew arrived around an hour later. I always get in there early to try and get as many photos in advance that I can. But most everyone arrived kind of just-in-time - so I did’t get a lot of opportunities to snap off some early pictures! The journey in and back was totally effortless - and it was truly a perfect day.

I was so busy in fact all day - that I didn’t leave the pedal room! I had intended to rove into the main hall, but never made that - there was just too much going on - and I managed to squeeze in a pepperoni pizza lunch, and another sit-down with Judith and Colin Steere.

There was only one brand that could not make it - Lydia from Audiostorm was a last minute cancellation - while everyone else on the roster pitched up.

Props to the Steere Family Crew - as marshalled by show runner / organiser Phil. Very much a family affair - with 7 members in attendance, including Cali on the door as usual, and Ian and Laura’s Poppy helping out for the first time. The family involvement is very much core to the cool ambience and friendly atmosphere of this event.

I’ve obviously settled into a pattern now - and this is the perfect event for me - with al the amenities I need in the one hall!

There were two brand new brands at the show - Talisman Audio / Tom, and Wyatt Audio / Wyatt - which appear at the top of this article. In fact - I picked up 2 pedals from Talisman Tom - and he very deservedly is this show’s cover star!

The day really could not have gone better for me! Good friend Joseph from Demiurge popped into the show to see me - and drop of 4 new pedals! Which was a very pleasant surprise - even though not an exhibitor at the show - I’ve featured him in the below write-up. 4 Pedals is very significant on any occasion. And those 4 were part of a 9-pedal haul what I picked up at the show - which is an all-time record. I think the previous record stood at 6 or 7!

Note that order in which brands are featured - is mostly per the order of the film roll! But with the 2 new brands at the show - at the top!

JHS Pedals corrects its DIY NOTADÜMBLË fumble with an improved Dual Channel V2 edition with A Box Later Boost, Presence Knob, Order Switch, and FX Loop onboard

I think everyone knows the story by now - how Josh somehow mistakenly included the wrong Clean/Boost Channel in the original NOTADÜMBLË pedal - the BBC-1, rather than the ’A Box Later’. While that’s been rectified now - along with a number of additions which appeared on Cosmodio Instruments DLX Mod, and Blammo’s TNYDÜMBLË.

JHS have done a brilliant exercise in upgrading the original - which now also includes a TRS FX Loop for the Clean / Boost side - so you can insert all manner of other pedals or pedal-chains even within that gain stage.

Controls - OVERDRIVE } Volume, Drive, EQ, Presence, Red Footswitch; CLEAN/BOOST } Output, Input, Green Footswitch. Order switch on front edge.

Ports - 1/4" TRS FX Loop (Needs TRS Y-Splitter cable), 1/4" TS In, 9V DC [-] 25mA, 1/4" TS Out.

I really enjoyed assembling the original version, and am looking forward to assembling its replacement too. I believe I was in the queue fairly early on - my order was confirmed at 4 minutes past the hour!

I have a feeling Blammo will be doing a version of this one too - and I will probably get that also - in that smaller compact format!

These ’NotA’ releases are great fun, and pretty great sounding too. At this price it’s surely well worth a punt!

This is one of my two most favoured extended range Muffs - alongside TX Pedals’ Animalizzer. I first reviewed the Chief Disruptor back in January of 2022 - where that was a massively evolved and improved take of its Dead Stag Predecessor.

This new Bloodstone Edition has the exact same insides as the original Chief Disruptor - just with that more doomy all-black / blackout Bloodstone colourway - which some will undoubtedly prefer. I’m of course tempted, but I’m loath to double down on pedals I already have - when my infinite wishlist is as long as it is. I actually still really love my original colourway artwork - and would struggle with choosing between that and this black edition - both are worthy!

Hungry Robot unleashes potent Stereo Edition of its Stargazer Spacey Ambient Dual Channel Reverb with subtle wet octave and swirly pitch bend modulation

A really elegant and tasteful Spacey Ambient Dual Channel Reverb with 2 identical Blue and Red Channels which you can set up independently and flip between on-the-fly.

This circuit sits inside Hungry Robot’s preferred landscape-style 1590BB type enclosure and features Boss-style silver-top knobs of different sizes to great effect.

This latest iteration of the Stargazer features trails, full wet/dry blend, and full stereo signal processing for the first time!

It further benefits from a really intuitive control topology for instant impact. I love the 2 diagonal lines of controls - you could not have rolled out this circuit any better. I love that this is a Full Stereo Reverb - which makes it a proper prospect for me. It can also do MISO - Mono In Stereo Out - if you use just one of the input ports.

CONTROLS

MIX - Controls the blend between wet and dry. Can be 100%. Wet and Dry are at equal
weight at 12 o’clock
DECAY - Controls the amount of decay and length of the reverb. Can go to near self-oscillation when maxed
SPARKLE - This is an octave up effect applied only to the reverb signal. It is not to be confused with shimmer. Shimmer is placed in the feedback loop and therefore it arpeggiates. This is added post feedback, so it simply adds an octave and provides a much simpler, less obnoxious sound
MOD - Swirly Pitch Bending on the reverb signal. Provides subtle movement to the reverb to
avoid being stale. Can get pretty wobbly at high levels.

The Stargazer Spacey Ambient Dual Channel Reverb goes for $272 plus Shipping, available right now from the Hungry Robot Webstore, and it will surely be imminently available in Europe too from the likes of Joe’s Pedals and Effekt Boutique!

I’ve yet to decide definitively whether one of these is on the cards for me, It’s flexible signal routing and full stereo nature makes it more than likely. This is a really cool execution for a reverb - and the Dual Channel thing makes it super flexible - it’s looking more and more likely now!

Mid-Size Modulation Favourites

A few notes in advance! Obviously I’m a huge fan of Analog Modulations in particular, and especially compact boxes - which deliver the largest numbers in my reference collection. While I do also like Portrait style 1590BB types too - and these are mostly they! The Hamstead Redwing is a little larger, and the Boss XS-100 is one of the largest pedals I have in my collection - and appears here somewhat shrunk down - otherwise this selection would look decidedly odd.

There were some very deep and conflicted deliberations on the final selection - as I measure up quality of output with range and ease of use and other practicalities. As I always say - on a different day I would have a slightly different selection - but here and now these are my favourites. This is still a work in progress - and as you can see - I still have a fair number of targets remaining. There’s no doubt though about the potency and prowess of my mid-size modulation selection!

Some special mentions at the start - ThorpyFX has the most pedals in this mid-size selection, while each of those is pipped at the top of its category, often by the narrowest of margins - particularly the Flanger Category - where it was neck-and neck between the Krozz Airborn, Asheville AFG-1, and the ThorpyFX Camoflange - all those are exceptional!

The 5 ThorpyFX’s per category are : Deep Oggin Chorus, Camoflange Flanger, Pulse Doppler Phaser, SixZero Andertons Anniversary Trem-Fuzz, and the ER-2 Uni-Vibe.

A Summary Overview of Central London's Denmark Street Gear Haven

When I first visited Denmark Street in the Mid 80’s - both sides of the row were all fully bustling Musical Instrument Shops - mostly guitar-related. I bought my first guitar here - a black gloss Ibanez RG440 Roadstar II Deluxe back in late 1985 - around my 16th birthday. It was a brand new instrument - but I can’t recall what I paid for it, or which shop I bought it from - it was on the North side of the street for sure. While for a period I was crossing the street back and forth in considering 2 competing superstrats at the time - for whatever reason I preferred the SSH Roadstar with the Floyd Rose - but soon got to dislike that bridge type. Great guitar otherwise - which I butchered over the years - loading in EMG 81 and 85 pickups - and ruining the electrical harness and 5-way switch in particular - which worked barely intermittently from then-on.

Very originally Denmark Street was London’s equivalent to New York’s Tin Pan Alley - full of music publishing houses and songwriters. But the Beatles soon put an end to most of those. Throughout the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s - Denmark Street evolved into one of the World’s premier destinations for Musical Gear Acquisition. Where things seemed to tail off a little in the 90’s and into the noughties - and there has been a gradual decline in the Musical side of the street since then - where barely half those addresses are now musical gear and instrument vendors.

Interestingly the whole of that area is now owned by Outernet London - including both sides of Denmark Street - and the magnificent Now Building - which has all those massive digital billboards - inside and out - which kind of make is the equivalent of New York’s Time Square! In any case all residents of Denmark Street now have Outernet London as their landlord - which developer is doing great things in refurbishing, modernising and future-proofing that area.

When I got back into guitar in 2016 - the pedal cabinets of Denmark Street were full to bursting - and I bought a fair number of pedals from both Regent Sounds and Wunjo back then - Mostly Chase Bliss from Regents, and mostly Skreddy from Wunjo - where neither of those brands are stocked there any more alas.

In fact those overflowing cabinets of yore look somewhat skinnier now - but like any vinyl crate-digging expedition - there are still gems and unique brands to be found at large. Stock turnover is slower than say at Andertons - and so there is not the same degree of price fluidity - but there are still bargains to be found if you’re smart about it.

I still stop off at Denmark Street fairly regularly - at least once or twice a month - I’m on particular friendly terms with my friends at Roland / Boss, while generally I get along pretty well with everyone.

I’m thinking of doing a series on Denmark Street - doing the stores one by one - probably ending with Roland / Boss, and starting with No. Toms Guitars whom I’ve gotten acquainted with very recently! And where my good friend Joe Light / Joe’s Pedals got his start!

I may though wait and see which of the stores reacts first to this article - and let that play a part in what order I tackle those stores.

So in this overview I will be picking out the remaining active stores on Denmark Street, other musically related outlets and landmarks - and naming the key brands covered by each.

Gamechanger Audio significantly extends and upgrades its Plus Piano style Sustainer Pedal - now in enhanced V2 edition

From a distance things look to be fairly similar (identical shape and dimensions) - but go closer - and you can see there’s a slew of new options and controls. The facia has double its previous controls - now 8 in place of 4; there are 3 controls on the rear panel - where there were none previously. And the optional extra Footswitch now has 2 further operational Modes to select via a 3-way rear slider-switch. We also have a new Spectral Dual Resonance Engine to extend the pedal’s prowess even further! And you can sustain additive notes now too instead of just the one!

So the overall core format is kind of unchanged - but this version has been somewhat tuned up and supercharged - and there’s actually so much added - with that extra degree of finesse and granularity - that it’s a no-brainer to upgrade if you’re into this kind of thing already.

When the Plus Pedal Sustainer first came out - I thought it a little large for my preferences - and felt that it would be tricky to accommodate it on the board. I’ve always liked the aesthetics - but a number of Gamechanger Audio devices aren’t particularly pedalboard-friendly - and that is mostly the case here.

While in intervening years my stance has softened somewhat considerably - which was triggered by the arrival of the Boss XS-100 - which is a massive 230mm long - the Plus Pedal’s 190mm doesn’t seem to be so much of an imposition as before! Besides I now kind of have a dedicated slot for those over-sized pedals - #15 - which normally houses the XS-100 or the Gamechanger Motor Synth Pedal. That slot could serve the Plus Pedal pretty well, while I would need to consider the cabling order to a degree. In any case no longer such a challenge to fit it on the board. I still feel that the circuit and mechanics could be accommodated in a somewhat smaller enclosure - it is still a large pedal for most - and comes with its own placement challenges.

The other is the aspect of the need for a separate Footswitch to flip modes - which I feel could have been done better / differently - that adds another £49 to the £348 of the core device - and makes for an even more cumbersome deployment.

I still feel this is the GOAT of this type of effect - and really beautifully executed - while it kind of needs that full deep gloss Steinway lacquer for the full effect. For sure a very commendable pedal - every which way - but relatively dear @ near enough £400 all in - so you would really need to get the most out of it!

One of these could very much be on the cards for me. Not this month, and not the next - too many existing priorities - but sometime in the Autumn this should become an active target. It definitely goes directly onto the wishlist. Conceptually it is pretty flawless - but I would liked to have seen a slightly more compact edition - with that grand piano gloss lacquer finish!
