9 x Sky Blue Means Chorus!

2019GPX9SkyBlueChoruses700.jpg

Another bonus round for the ’Pedal Primary Colour Wheel’ series - I kind of knew I would likely do this at some stage - the Boss Sky Blue influence on the Chorus format. Interestingly the original Choruses from Boss and MXR were somewhat dull grey boxes, and it wasn’t really until Boss’s CE-3 that the colour was properly locked down - the blue of the first CE-2 was typically a little paler and less saturated than the hue we’ve all become so familiar with now - or ...

2019GPX9RedMeansMarshall700.jpg

This is a direct follow-up to my Pedal Primary Colour Wheel article where I noted the direct correlation between the colour Red and Marshall-style Drive and Distortion pedals. I named 6 that fitted the bill then, and I’ve found a few more to complete an elegant colour-matched grouping. The post was triggered by the original article, but also my recent acquisition of the Sitek Wuffy Distortion.

Note that these pedals vary between Plexi and JCM-800 styles of drive - some cover more...

Last time I did a Tone Bender overview I limited the selection to 12, and as much by chance as anything else I still managed to get a pretty decent roundup of most of the main Tone Bender varieties although not quite all as featured here. In the world of fuzz though only the Big Muff can compete with the convoluted and complex nature of the Tone Bender Family Tree - which I will endeavour to distil first, and then extrapolate into my own favourite / preferred pedals!

It all starts with...

I’ve actually been meaning to do this post for a while now - I’ve had several requests over the years to do a ’best of’ feature for Catalinbread - with some even wanting one specifically on delays - which actually only number 6 and therefore don’t quite merit a solo outing - although we’ll see. So this at last is that post - taking in the best of new and established, innovative and unique - across the 4 sub-categories - Foundation Overdrives | Delays and ...

The DLS has been on my wishlist for the longest time, but I’ve never quite yet felt the need to hit the trigger - until this very day. I knew that the DLS was Andy Martin’s favourite Marshall / Plexi Style pedal - with both its Super Lead and Super Bass modes. The pedal has been around in this format since it was released in early 2013. Since then we’ve had a limited colourway edition - the Purple Levant from 2015 - but this is the first time that the internals have been &...

The celebrated InterFax HP-1 Harmonic Percolator which became a major part of Shellac Guitarist Steve Albini’s signature sound had somewhat obscure origins in the early 1970’s at a Milwaukee, Wisconsin electronics repair shop run by one Ed Giese. The Harmonic Percolator makes use of rather unique circuitry utilising a combination of very obscure Germanium PNP and Silicon NPN Transistors (2N404A/1N695 + 2N3565) which pass through even order harmonics while suppressing odd order ...

This feature was inspired by two recent events - firstly I came across a mention of the new Knight Audio Technologies’ Brian May Classic Triple-Mode Treble Booster, and secondly - Pete Thorn this last Thursday released a really smart video on the use of Treble Boosters. Pete featured 4 such pedals - the 65 Amps Colour Boost, Crazy Tube Circuits Constellation, Divided by 13 Dyna Ranger, and the rather huge Pete Cornish TB-83 Extra Duplex Treble Boost. Of those 4, I actually already have ...

I should probably have covered this off sooner but I’m so satisfied with my True North Tweed Drive that I’ve not felt it necessary to look at alternatives. That said, there have been a few fairly recent additions to this group - so I thought I might as well do an overview of what’s around - usual suspects, new and old.

I’ve been aware of Tweed style overdrives for a while, in fact I had the Bearfoot FX Sparkling Yellow OD3 for more than a year before trying it ...

I’ve only just very recently provided a list of my 20 favourite Marshall Style Pedals - and obviously some of those have been separated out into the heavier High Gain category - but when you focus on distortion you can’t really get away from Marshall to a large degree - such is its influence on these types of tones. In fact 14 pedals are retained from the Marshall article and 10 more somewhat different varieties have been added.

If you’ve recently read the Marshall ...

After doing lots of more individual flavours of drive pedal overviews recently - it’s time to do another roundup of that most eternally favoured of amp distortion tones - the many flavours of Marshall. There are a few here that are based on JTM45 sounds - but generally I’ve separated the Bluesbreaker style pedals into their own category. Most of these are within that classic rock heyday range or sort of Plexi through JCM800.

I’ve tried to indicate most relevant Amp ...
