This Three-Gain-Stage / Triple stacking preamp utilises unique Dr. No designed special Silicon Skullsistor Transistors - with one per each of the 3 stages. I’m not 100% clear as to whether the Doctor manufactures those in their entirety - or just moulds the skull casings over the top of a special and specific TO-92 style transistor. Either way it’s really cool!
So apart from those custom Skullsistors we also have a gorgeous artwork and unique custom made flocked chicken-head style knobs and...
36 outstanding Boost and Overdrive pedals featured here in various sizes - 35 of which are already in the reference collection - with the Superlunar SR-01 the last remaining straggler!
The rules of the game are that I can only finally recommend pedals that I own and have lived with, while I can also feature a few other intended targets in the overview which I fully intend to acquire (like the Superlunar SR-01) - but those can’t feature in the final rankings. So there is only one remaining ...
October was a super busy month - one of the busiest ever - with such a scope and scale and body of work covered - I’m quite shattered as a result!
We had of the penultimate Events of the year :
And around one dozen key posts as below also :
The Power Driver & Booster is a Discrete Harmonic Overdrive - consisting of 2 x Transistor Gain Stages for the main Overdrive, and a further Transistor for the Clean Booster. Those well guarded Transistors have an exceptional breakup character, which is further enhanced by Symmetrical and Asymmetrical clipping 1n914 Diodes. That whole combination sounds superb - the core Overdrive is fire! And the Clean Boost is further warm and expressive - all the elements combine superbly for an exceptional ...
It’s great news that Dr. No is reissuing its iconic Holy Wahcamoly Wah - here in 10th Anniversary Flocked Edition, Not just the pedal enclosure is fully flocked - but the red chicken-head knob is too! A really cool version of this pedal. And whenever I see the Wahcamoly I can’t but help call to mind the JAM Pedals Wahcko also - which is equally colourful and flavourful.
Those are two the very best full-flavour Wah pedals with the same degree of attention to detail - focused on the exterior ...
One of the most striking pedals made to date is also Sarah Lipstate’s (Noveller) signature Drive, Loop, Reverb, and Delay Pedal.
I’ve long considered getting in one of these essentially collector’s pieces. But I’ve reasoned that it would most likely end up as shelf-ware - as I would be unlikely to call upon that specific set of effects. I have far more expansive Delays and Reverbs in my chain, I don’t much use the FX / Insert Loop - and have several preferred drive types to the one included...
Or more correctly speaking JAM Pedals’ Greek Design Agency Group ’Beetroot’ won the Gold Award in the ’17.8 Printed Miscellaneous’ category of this year’s European Design Awards. And well deserved in my opinion as JAM Pedals is one of the relatively few companies that focuses as much attention on its packaging as it does the enclosure artwork and of course its key circuit designs.
Modern day ’Unboxing’ has risen to a new level of artistry where for luxury brands it is a key foundation part ...
My big thing his year - apart from the usual pedal-chain ToneQuest has been my separate ’Year of Fuzz’ journey for which this article will probably be a Part 1, even though I’ve already reached most of the goals I set at the start of the year, and am somewhat over quota! When I first started down this road I really did not know too much about fuzz beyond Hendrix really. I did not realise how much fuzz was actually used on so many of my favourite records and tracks. I also love...
I’ve been meaning to do a feature on this Dutch pedal-maker for a while, and the new announcement for the forthcoming Moon Canyon pedal makes this a perfect time to do an introduction / mini-overview. The elusive Dr. No has been building pedals in Eindhoven since 2003, and specialises in rather unusual artsy enclosures which may not be to everyone’s taste! There are a slew of fuzz pedals here in different guises - often teamed up with one or more complementary effects.
The most famous / ...
