I’ve been following this pedal’s development since it first emerged - now pictured in its second iteration with more evenly spaced toggle-switches around its perimeter. In short each of those 12 x 3-way switches is neutral / off in its middle position - while left/right or up/down gives you different pathways through the circuit which often impacts multiple circuit elements and component values simultaneously. In some ways this is something of a chaos-engine with around 500K ...

JAM Pedals Receives Gold 2020 European Design Award for its Packaging

Or more correctly speaking JAM Pedals’ Greek Design Agency Group ’Beetroot’ won the Gold Award in the ’17.8 Printed Miscellaneous’ category of this year’s European Design Awards. And well deserved in my opinion as JAM Pedals is one of the relatively few companies that focuses as much attention on its packaging as it does the enclosure artwork and of course its key circuit designs.

Don't Worry about Missing out on Limited Edition Pedals - Original is Often The Best!

In a recent piece I slightly bemoaned the prevalence of second edition pedal iterations that held more appeal than the originals - and how that if you bought to soon you might end up with an aesthetically inferior model. So this article is the direct antidote to that where I highlight pedals than in my opinion look best in their original release artwork.

Pedal Design is very much an applied art - where name, function, format and colourway are all expertly selected and combined to ...

I don’t typically feature coverage of simply 2nd iteration limited edition artwork or colourway pedals - unless there is some sort of significant underlying change. While on this occasion I would kind of like to raise the issue of ’First Mover Disadvantage’!

By which I mean getting in on the first round release of a pedal - where soon after you acquire one - you kind of regret not holding out slightly longer - as an even better version materialises later on. This ...

Beetronics FX finally does the right thing and swaps the Octahive toggle-switch for a Second Footswitch - but only for Custom Editions

As far as I’m concerned this has been somewhat a long time coming and I’ve mentioned it a number of times previously. While the Whoctahell Sub-Octave Fuzz has had dual footswitches from the start - the Octahive Upper Octave Fuzz has always relied on a side toggle-switch until now.

I am generally a fan of Beetronics pedals and have 3 of theirs to-date - the Royal Jelly, Swarm, and the lower-right Octahive ArrowMint Edition pictured above. It always niggled me that the ...

When I shared the recent update about the forthcoming Decibelics Angry Swede V2 with added Blend control I hypothesized on my ideal deluxe edition of the HM-2 style and what format that might take. I shared just a couple of basic ideas, but was further encouraged by several readers to visualize those ideas into one of my typical artworks.

So in my usual style, I have drawn together several of my favourite influences - which I will reveal in a little more detail further along - so you ...

The Perfect Compact Guitar Pedal Design - 2020 Edition

Guitar Gear Improvements and Prototypes
2020GPXPrototypeX700V2.jpg

Readers of this blog will know that I periodically assemble and consider all the latest pedal technologies and interface innovations to produce a sort of extrapolated idealised composite for how compact pedal design might be improved/evolved.

I am constantly looking for more versatility and flexibility - as well as much improved usability and learnability - and more elegant ways to control and display secondary and advanced functions and scroll and activate presets. My very first take ...

Neural DSP has Significantly Evolved and Improved on Pedal Interfaces and Controls

I’ve yet to feel the need to switch over to one of those floor amp-modellers - along the lines of the Boss GT-1000, Fractal Audio Axe FX8, Headrush Pedalboard, Hotone Ampero, Kemper Profiler Stage and of course Line 6 Helix - which popularised his sort of thing in the first place.

I’ve always felt that the Line 6 Helix and Hearush Pedalboard had a leg up on the competition because of their amazing colourful and intuitive control menus and topologies. In many ways for the ...

With my extended collection of pedals, I’ve always been fascinated by the very wide variety of different footswitches and their varying action/feel/function. Most of my pedals have hard-clicking switches - with my favourites within that category having a significantly softer clicking action while the lesser favourites are super-hard-resistant and stiff - and almost crunchy/brittle/hard-clicking when you stomp on them. I understand that the vast majority of pedal-makers, particularly ...

Pedal Design 101 - The Boss Colour Chart and 40 Shades of Tone!

2019GPXBossColourSpectrum700.jpg

This article is a natural follow up the Pedal Primary Colour Wheel feature I did back in August, and has actually been on the drawing board for a while. I kind of knew the process would be long-winded and time-consuming - which it was, and I wasn’t sure what formation I would be best off using - so it all evolved somewhat organically with the starting point as a Purple to Red Spectrum Transition with a monochromatic scale tagged onto the end. In any case it ended up in this current format...
