So the second time we’re at Fat Lil’s, thank you to all the helper elves that made all this happen - of course UK Chase Bliss Ambassador Doug Tolley and team - including Jonny ’Guitar’ Davies, Nick Rees, and Fat Lil’s owner Paul Spink.
Cover star on this occasion is Holy Island Audio’s Gwion Christmas - that photo just came out the coolest with those light-flares - it’s often just about the aesthetic hit - I also feel that said visual gives you a good flavour of the venue too!
I picked ...
The much celebrated Waitlist Wednesday is back tomorrow - in fact from midnight tonight! Where you can PREORDER each of Reeves Electro’s Point-to-Point Builds. For most pedals it’s a case of unlimited preorders, while for the BlackHatSound-Deluxe - because of parts availability restrictions - those are limited to just 10, and the Plus Distortions are limited to 25.
Here is the full list with the all-important prices!
February can often seem a rather odd month after the hustle and bustle of NAMM Show January - where a lot of new stuff always gets announced - while increasingly outside the NAMM schedule - but certainly in and around it! Projects delayed from the previous year often get released in January, but this year those kind of seem to be more spaced out - with some not feted to happen until March / April. February always seems slow compared to January, and that sometimes extends into March too before ...
For me Markus and Izzy have left the best to last for Facet February - as we get a second chance to order this fantastic ballsy modern leaning take on the Fuzz Face. As always Markus has selected a superb pair of NOS Silicon Transistors for the job - 2 x MicroElectronics C1016Y Yellow Dots - these are essentially the higher gain grade of the red dot ME-C1016’s used in the RedDotSound.
Markus describes this unique Fuzz Face take as :
"This fuzz F@ce has a greasy mid range and a very ...
The first batch of the BHS-D had uniformly white insides, while batch 2 had mostly gold interiors, my copper one, and one in Zonk blue! I would have doubly lucked out if the circuit anchor posts had remained brass as in the first batch, but they were switched to steel in this new batch. I still feel that my copper insides provide the best complementary colour scheme to the components - really sets off the greens and yellows of the resistors and capacitors, as well as the footswitch ...
The 4th and final variant of the Facet family. This is based on the 2-transistor Tone Bender variety made by the Italian Jen Factory - for Vox - in 1966.
It has the least amount of low-end of any of the Tone Benders / Fuzz Faces - and can be considered to have a somewhat Treble Booster like profile - with enhanced highs. Lots of players love it because its somewhat brighter profile tends to cut through more in the mix.
Markus has unearthed some really special vintage Philips silver-face...
The 3rd in the Facet series to be released - following the Mid-Forward Facet IZ (Yellow), and recent Facet 1.5 Tone Bender variant (Red).
This cool Cyan hued facia edition is based on the Type 3 Germanium Voiced Silicon BC183 Edition (Type I is NKT275, Type II is BC108/BC109. Markus lucked out in securing original 1969 Texas Instrument BC183’s - from a batch actually ordered by Arbiter back in 1969.
I have several BC183 Fuzz Faces in the collection - it’s very common for when trying to ...
The second phase of the Reeves Electro DaughterBoard Series sees 4 cool takes on the 2-Transistor Fuzzes which evolved in 1966. We’ve already had a taste with the more modern-leaning and mid-forward Facet IZ Fuzz Face, where we also have takes on the Tone Bender MK 1.5, Vox Tone Bender, and original Arbiter Fuzz Face Distortion. You then get an opportunity to order the Facet IZ again at the end of the month (28th Feb) - and indeed you can order the whole set of 4 then if you wish!
Each of ...
Good communications are the essence of quality customer service. And if you’re a pedal maker with pre-orders and waiting lists and such - then it really matters that you can properly keep customers informed on what progress is being made and if there may be any perceived delays or kinks in the process.
With preorders in particular those customers will have been informed of a likely ETA initially - which alas often slips due to matters outside the builder’s control. It’s important to ...
And so to what is often my favourite category - the many wonderful flavours of fuzz - and we have some hugely innovative pedals in the selection this year - one of these may even be my pedal of the year!
So there are 24 in this year’s selection - where I’m just missing the Collision Devices TARS, Fender Shields Blender, JAM Pedals Octaurus, KMA Machines Mandrake, Reeves Electro Facet IZ, and Unsound Circuitry Kato Glitch Fuzz - where I will attempt to add most of those to the reference ...
