I’ve been lucky enough to have this formidable overdrive pedal since pretty much the start of May. However, like Thorpy’s Pulse Doppler had to be delayed because of parts supply issues - much the same happened with the production of the Angry Rhubarb. It’s great to finally be able to share this gem with everyone.
This is a Single Parametric EQ Overdrive with Pre Drive and Post Drive control over the gain stages. The first realisation here is to start with selecting ...

May turned out to be another pretty busy month as far as new releases and the overall collection is concerned. I personally acquired around 20 or so new pedals - with some further acquisitions not having landed yet.
Obviously a fair amount of new Overdrives and Phasers in particular - while May covered most of the key pedal categories in one way or another. And most of the pedal-chain additions for the month have been reviewed or touched on in some way previously - with the exception ...
Of course the Pulse Doppler is another fantastic Dan Coggins collaboration, follow-up and heir to the 1995 Lovetone Doppelgänger Phaser/Vibrato. Dan and Adrian have done a fantastic job of delivering the best of vintage style phaser with modern extended feature set.

And so it begins again! This time punctuated by Virtual NAMM / Believe in Music Week and some certain JA incident.
I will include a mini NAMM roundup here of what some of my favourites were. In the past I’ve done a separate highlights article on the subject - but there really weren’t that many releases this time around to warrant such - in fact I would estimate only around 10% of the volume released in 2020 and 2019.
I will also indicate where I think I’m ...

And so here is the culmination of everything that happened to the pedal-chain in 2020.
There were quite a few more displacements than I had expected - all told 22 slots changed over this year - including 19 Brand New Pedals for 2020, then 3 slightly older pedals, and some incidentals.
The most significant shift, and the one that caused the most disruption was the arrival of Boss GT-1000 CORE in October. This is often the case when you bring in a big new pedal - and you need to...

It is fairly evident that my favourite pedal genre is Fuzz - seeing as that of all the pedals I added to the collection this year - 80 of those were Fuzz varieties.
This particular selection consists of 31 pedals across different sizes and sub-genres. And of those 31, I personally own 22 of them. All the remainder are of course on my wishlist, these are :
- DanDrive Secret Machine (I own Secret Weapon edition)
- Dusky Electronics Augustus Octave Fuzz
- Fjord Fuzz Fenris Super-Fuzz

And here is the first of the category overviews for the year - combining those Overdrive and Distortion pedals which sparked some interest for me. Note that there will be 4 of these types of articles - Overdrive & Distortion (this one), Fuzz, Delay and Reverb (exc. Reverb Workstation already covered), and Modulation + Pitch + Untility pedals. Before I then reveal my overall 25 or so favourite favourite pedals for the year in a Best-of-the-Best listing - with possibly some sneaky additions.
Adrian shared this with me at least a month ago now - and while I don’t really need one as I already have buffers onboard certain pedals in my signal chain. I nevertheless really want one - if for nothing else other than a cute objet d’art, memento / memorabilia or paperweight even - and in any case it’s always nice to have a buffer in reserve in case you really need one - and none are as elegant as this!

This is probably the most anticipated of my 12 Degrees roundups - and is a touch more complex and different to the other 2 in the series. Within each category here there can be a huge difference in character and output - for instance with Fuzz Faces going from quite mild to rather searing Meathead and Regulus VIII levels of aggression. So the gradual step up in gain per category doesn’t apply here. And because of circuit variations and differences in components and construction, each and ...

This edition comes rather hot on the heels of the recent 12 Degrees of Overdrive version as many readers’ inquiries questioned a couple of missing categories there - which I explained would rather figure within the Distortion contingent which is present here in all its glory!
As always, these is some considerable amount of grey science at play here - best typified by the Big Muff and Rat circuits - which are both very much distortions as well as fuzz varieties. I have 3 x 12 ...
