As I predicted - very shortly after the JHS-led large format Big Muff 2 (which is still available), we got the compact EHX variant at half the price, and less than a third of the size!
Readers will know how I feel about unnecessarily large format pedals - which is why those original / styled EHX pedal types are far from my favourites. Where I will almost always prefer a compact pedalboard-friendly take on that circuit.
My friend Ian at Gigahearts has done his own personal take on that circuit just for himself - labelled the ’Gig Buff 2’ - in fetching pink sparkle. With those gorgeous Lovetone knobs - I fancy one of those too! Alas he doesn’t want to raise the ire of EHX - and so won’t be making any further copies of that!
By the time you read this post I should already have ordered the smaller EHX one - and it should be well on the way. For Ian’s Gigahearts take - that was just a personal custom build - I tried to persuade him to make just one more for me - but he’s understandably entirely reluctant to do so! He’s mostly offering these as just £10 DIY PCB’s - for you to build your own - and he’s already sold 40 of those, so those are going very well!
Controls - Volume, Tone, Sustain
All 3 of these are identical circuits near enough - with some very slight parts variations - they should all sound pretty similar too!
There are other builders that have done their own individual takes of this recently rediscovered Big Muff 2 circuit - so you have plenty of options if you want one. As of writing this - I’ve kind of given up on trying to get a Gigahearts one - it’s kind of Blakemore Effects Deus Ex Machina vibes for me once more!
