When the NOTAKLÖN materialised last year, I was intrigued, but never felt like I really needed to add one of those to the collection. The horizontal format is not my favourite enclosure type - where I much prefer the vertical orientation / arrangement we see for the somewhat more expansive NOTADÜMBLË.
Readers will know that I’m a big fan of Dumble Drives, where I have a number of favourites already, but very few dual channel takes like the one.
The NOTADÜMBLË featureds 2 Channels - a Clean Buffer Boost John Mayer style one (A Box Later), and a more driven violin-sounding Dumble Drive as preferred by Carlos Santana, Joe Bonamassa, Larry Carlton and Eric Johnson - the latter option / channel being more of a Dumble ODS type of thing!
Controls - OVERDRIVE } Volume, EQ, Drive, CLEAN (BOOST + BUFFER) } Output, Input (Impedance / Feel / Thinner > Fuller), CHANNEL MODE : Drive UP / Clean DOWN.
It will be really interesting to see how this one compares to say my favourites - Tanabe Zenkudo, Demon Kondo-Shifuku, and the Custom Tones Ethos Clean-Fusions II. Also the Colortone Pedals V2 Compact Parasite Overdrive!
Despite my not really needing the NOTAKLÖN, or liking that particular format, I was still highly tempted, and came very close to getting that one. While I ordered this one on sight! About 20 minutes after it launched - immediately after I returned from a trip to the Cinema.
Most of us had guessed from the teaser - and the style of knob used - in particular - that this new circuit would most likely be a Dumble Drive variety, but I don’t think any of us predicted we would get a dual-channel variant. I guess the $99 limited the complexity of the circuit - where I would have preferred the Mode switching to be handled by a second footswitch. Perhaps a Rogue Rehousing is called for - to make that happen! That would certainly be a cool modification!
JHS made 5,000 of these NOTADÜMBLËS for launch - but I still reckon that first batch will sell through super quickly. Hopefully mine will land within a week or so! These are $119 (obviously a little more complex than the NOTAKLÖN) - which translates to £91, with £17 shipping cost for London, UK. And probably around £30 customs and import charges once it arrives this side of the pond (I will update these details upon arrival). You can of course order your own one direct from the JHS Pedals Webstore.
The kit consists of approximately 30 parts - where it can be assembled using the most basic of tools - you should already have at home, no soldering is required! It’s more a snap-in style of build - with some fixing screws! Also comes with a pair of spanners which are concealed within the green circuitboard component!
For me this is a step above the NOTAKLÖN, and far more appealing for me.
It definitely looks like JHS has delivered the goods once more - and have another massive success on their hands. As to whether it will be as big as the NOTAKLÖN - that remains to be seen. I look forward to finding out just how quickly those 5,000 initial units sell out.
I would imagine quite a few of you will be wanting to order one of these in too!
