So this is Fuzz Face #104 for me - I always say I have room for one more brilliant one - and this one is one of the very best - it’s properly special sauce! The selected transistors - NKT CV7007 and 2N527 sound amazing together - really vibrant and searing and full on - with all the great hallmarks of classic Germanium Fuzz Face dynamics and guitar volume gain cleanup - but with more range and verve!
You get an external Q2 Bias - which is essential for me - as well as a really cool 3-way Gain / Gain Structure selector. Supposedly different resistors that temper the output gain - where for my favourite settings delivers something very unique at a pinpoint intersection of Gain and Bias.
Controls - [R]esistor / Gain Structure : 1 | 2 | 3, Level, Attack (Fuzz Gain Level), Bias (Q2 Transistor Bias).
For my favourite setting I have the [R] / Gain Structure switch in the middle, Level at just a fraction past 3 o’c, Attack @ Noon, and Bias @ around 2 o’c. It almost sounds like there is a somewhat subtle cocked way in the mix and you get a kind of dual harmonics sound - sounds really amazing and special to my ears - I kind of serendipitously landed on that setting - and it sound very unique indeed. The harmonics you can get out of this pedal are quite exceptional.
I always say that fuzzes are inspiration machines - they each inspire different styles of playing - and I really love playing this one. It sounds great all the way around each of those dials - also on more starved or sticky tones - each [R] setting has a very distinct timbre. I’m not sure this new favourite sound of mine has been achieved on any of those other 103 Fuzz Faces of mine - which still harbour many of the very best examples of Fuzz Face available anywhere - around half of those are Germanium varieties.
I really love all the different flavours of fuzz - particular the bold, full fat searing ones - like you find on this very unit - it sounds so lively!
I pretty much have loved all of my friend Seb’s fuzzes that I have acquired - and Farmer Factory is pretty much the Basic Audio of Europe as I’ve said before - so many of Seb’s fuzzes are exceptional - I particularly enjoy my Harmonic Generator Fuzz, and Turret-style Fresh Fuzz - the Horny ’66 is my 5th Fuzz from the brand. I kind of had my eye on that series for a while - and the pink swirly edition was for sure the right one for me a the right time - I love everything about it.
I’ve said it before - Seb is a black belt Fuzz Master - and his pedal creations are never less than exceptional. You can currently buy the Orange Swirl Horny ’66 sibling to mine right now on Reverb.com - where it goes for €200 / £175 / $225 - these are exceptional value and are some of the very finest Fuzz Face examples out there - Seb has such a great ear for tone and all his transistor selections are inspired! - every one of his fuzzes sounds superb to me - I’m very glad to be able to add this particular specimen to my reference collection!
You can hear from the demos below just how superb these sound - these are absolutely some of my most favourite sounding fuzzes!
