I’m fairly well versed inTraynor Solid State amps from the late 70’ and 80’s - which were much loved by garage punks and garage rockers alike - for those slightly loose, raw and ragged, even scuzzy kind of rock tones. And the lower-gain side of the pedal is in part inspired by the Bluesbreaker - with heaps of brightness in the mix, and with the voice toggle up - delivers a uniquely bright and clangy kind of sound with some real bite to it too. You can of course dial that out by lowering the highs somewhat - which get very bright in particular when you switch in the extra gain stage.
With that 3-Band EQ it’s actually really versatile - and you can dial out much of its core character if you wish - make it slightly smoother and more bluesy. But really it was born to rock and be edgy and attitudinal!
Controls - Gain, Voicing : Clear & Bright UP / Additional grittier Gain Stage DOWN, Master Output, High, Mid, and Low EQ’s.
I tend to have the EQ’s pretty fixed with Highs around noon, Mids dialled all the way back, and Lows between noon and 3 o’c. In fact 3 o’clock on both Gain and Master is pretty solid too - while you can temper both of those per your own preferences. I mostly range from 9 o’c to 3 o’c on the Gain Knob - with the Master mostly stuck at 3 o’c too, but sometimes set back as far as 1 o’c.
For me this would be the perfect pedal for all those relatively recent / young 3rd generation punk bands. Those solid state Traynor Amps were always perfect for Garage Punks and Garage Rockers - and this Spectral Fire - has plenty of Fire and Grit to its output - with quite a bit of Brightness and Bite too.
I have a number of Traynor style preamp pedals from Drunk Beaver in particular - and I love the distinct voicings of those preamps. There's definitely a defined texture and slight scuzziness / raw and ragged - sort of unrefined in some ways.
'Clangy' is the best descriptor for the Bright voicing, and with the second Gain Stage applied you would probably say it sounded somewhat more raw and gritty! You often need to adjust the EQ's 2 when you travel between gain voicings.
This pedal has a myriad uses - but ideally should filed under 'raucous' - it's very loud too! Some people will try to tame it and smooth out some of its rougher edges - but for me those are an essential part of its character and DNA. It's a near perfect execution as far as I'm concerned.
The only change I would make is to stick the binary voicing function onto a second footswitch - so you can easily kick in the extra gain and grit on-the-fly - with your foot, versus having to bend down to flip the switch!
All you punks - young and old should have a tonne of fun with this, it can also have a softer side to a degree - with the voicing switch up - but for me this pedal was really born to rock - and it should mostly be deployed in a hairy / sweaty environment. Its core output is straight up punk rock as far as I'm concerned!
It's a lively and vibrant pedal for sure, visceral even at time - with plenty of aces up its sleeve. It can be adapted for so many different styles - but it should really be used for somewhat punky attitudinal rock. A fantastic, distinct and different overdrive. I must say I really rather like it!
The Spectral Fire is currently available on the Holy Island Audio Webstore - for £175 (same edition as mine), along with a version of the Abracadaver @ £100, and a new colourway edition of the Blast Radius @ £135 (Yellow + Pink vs original Yellow + Black). I now need to decide how much I like that new colourway, and wonder also why Gwion did not tell me it was back in stock - like he promised he would!
Some days are tougher than others! And this one is already a crazy busy week for me. I was at Rainger FX yesterday in preparation for Thursday's launch - and pedals are coming at me from every direction. I've already long since depleted the pedal budget and emergency funds for the month - and there's still the Norwich Fret Fest to go!
