So we’re at that time of year again for another Full Metal Racket Rundown. I meant to have it coincide with halloween - but was so inundated with new releases work - that I really struggled to fit this one in. And it now appears a month later than I wanted it to - but still very much at the appropriate end of the year!
As is ever the case - this selection continues to evolve over the years - and inevitably some previous candidates get bounced for more impressive newer variants.
For this...
There are 32 Finalists in the Fuzz Category, where I own all but 3 :
The Finalists
Here it’s the turn of the new distortion pedals this year. Where I own all but 7 here :
So of this selection of 34 I own 27 :

Another totally mad month for sure - loaded with frenetic activity and peppered with highs as well as crushing disappointments. The first give-away for GPX didn’t quite hit the highs I expected (said give-away closes tonight at 23:59 BST). And there are some weird gaps in the entrants’ home countries - certainly no shortage from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, or much of mainland Europe. I’m active in a lot more countries than have so far entered the give-away, so I don’t fully understand why ...
This is one of the very best 2-Transistor Fuzzes I’ve experienced - it pays to check the instructions on this one though - as the Tone and Body controls are both inverted - going from Maximum to Minimum values! That sort of thing can at times catch me out a little!
So in one respect this is a Classic Fuzz Face, while in another it’s really a Fuzz Factory 7 style Fuzz Face - with very similar controls to that more evolved circuit.
It is therefore essentially my 5th Fuzz Factory proper - ...
February can often seem a rather odd month after the hustle and bustle of NAMM Show January - where a lot of new stuff always gets announced - while increasingly outside the NAMM schedule - but certainly in and around it! Projects delayed from the previous year often get released in January, but this year those kind of seem to be more spaced out - with some not feted to happen until March / April. February always seems slow compared to January, and that sometimes extends into March too before ...
I’m a huge fan of the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal Circuit - and its classic all-knobs-dimed output - somewhat harsh and searing Swedish Death Metal / Buzzsaw / Chainsaw / Twin Peaks Extreme Distortion tonality. While actually this Homework Series Metal pedal is not really that - you don’t ever fully get up to those levels of harshness - so this is not the pedal for those that want to exactly replicate those more extreme classic metal sounds.
Rather - what we have here is more of an Extended Range...
So 2024 is off to a pretty spirted start! I treaded myself to 2 pedals right at the tail end of the year - the Poly VERBS puts in an appearance in this month’s selection - while the Reeves Electro BHS-D is running a touch late and will be part of the February selection instead.
This time of the year has to be mostly about NAMM - while I feel that a lot of builders kind of took away from NAMM and launched / showcased their new release in advance!
I’ve still to make it to NAMM - timing’s ...
This rundown has been a long time in the making - having been iterated many times over, and changed as recently as this last Tuesday - when Keeley brought out its Muse Driver - Super AT Mod replacement!
Readers will know that I’ve cited the Keeley Freak Fuzz Modded BD-2 Blues Driver as my favourite all-time overdrive pedal, and be extension - the Blues Driver circuit and variations of it are my own very favourite gain tones. Some gravitate towards Tube Screamer, others Blues Breaker, Timmy ...
Interestingly I’ve featured 2 Blues Driver derived overdrives in very short succession - and both are excellent, while this Homework Series Blues is the closest pedal out there to my much loved and favourite Overdrive Pedal of all time - the Robert Keeley Freak Fuzz Modified Boss BD-2 Blues Driver. That comes with the Phat Mod too, but its main point of distinction is 2 Germanium Transistors mounted on the pedal’s facia, which deliver a fantastic Fuzz voicing also.
I’m not sure how much the...
