One of my favourite control topologies / Tone Stacks is a 2-controls : Tilt EQ + Mids Sweep - that is surprisingly potent for Overdrive Pedals in particular. The eagle-eyed among you will have noted that the relatively recent Comp / EQ has a near identical main variable control topology - Level, Comp, Mids, Tilt. Where on this ’Boost / EQ’ we have Level, Gain, Mids and Tilt.
In fact this pedal is very much based on the Gain engine / circuit from the Comp / EQ - minus the compressions element. A clean boost element is active within the circuit - which you can gain up to a Medium strength overdrive.
The previous Diamond Overdrive Pedal - the Diamond Drive was more conventional with : Level, Drive, Bass, and Treble - so 2-band EQ - where I personally much prefer the Tilt + Mids tone stack of tis new one.
The toggle switch flips between Boost and Overdrive gain structure - so presumable adding in a further gain stage (via additional diode clipping). At least conceptually I prefer the Boost / EQ to the Diamond Drive - while I would need to test them head-to-head to pick out a favourite.
It’s certainly an interesting project - building up a Boost / Overdrive from the guts of a Compressor pedal. I’m not sure I particularly like this colourway - all the original pedals were very distinct and mostly quite bright and impactful - I feel this one would have been better served by a bolder colourway.
The Boost / EQ / Overdrive is available for $209 / €239 / £215 from the Diamond Pedals Webstore! And of course imminently at leading International Dealers.
I’ve included the original reissues release visual - so you can see the Conp / EQ and Diamond Drive pedals that this Boost / EQ is adjacent to! Note that the Boost/EQ is actually a kind of reissue as there was a 1590BB size version out for the same circuit - around 15 years ago! So this is not a new idea / project as I first assumed - most of the heavy-lifting was presumably done for the originall!
