So what we have here is a simple and elegant take on the Ram’s Head Muff - with a couple of extra controls - here beautifully rendered as 2 x 2-way rocker-switches - one for Mids, and the other for Gating.
At the top you have the familiar 3 Big Muff core controls - while the normally labelled Sustain - is here labelled Gain!
Controls - Volume, Tone, Gain (Sustain), Mids : Bump / Scoop, Gate : Open / Gated.
I won’t really buy any Big Muff pedal - unless it allows me to shape the mids - which this one does very well, and simply - I’m quite happy to have the Mids as a 2-way as here, as 3-way (Vick Audio). or as a Sweeping Mids Contour (Stomp Under Foot et al.) - all 3 varieties appeal to me.
Here we additionally have a Gate - which allows you to render more starved and chocked textures.
It’s a fetching colcourway in Crimson Red brushed aluminium. An all-round very neat pedal. I wasn’t as interested in the recent Pigtronix Cosmosis I Reverb - it didn’t seem to have enough about it to warrant coverage - but perhaps I’ve warmed to that a little more now!
I have more than 110 Big Muffs in my reference collection now - so I definitely don’t need this one more variety - but I’m still considering it!
This Gas Giant is super appealing on the price point - at just $149 and equivalent on the Pigtronix Webstore, while it doesn’t seem to be available in the UK / EU yet! It’s definitely worth at least a consideration!
This is the first of the contrasting neon backgrounds series - we’ll see how long that lasts - several visuals have been prepared in line with that series!
