Eventide's Preset Overlays for its mid-size pedals, including the Tricerachorus - are an ingenious innovation that everyone should copy!

I obviously slept on this when it was launched back in the Autumn of 2021 - as I’ve long owned the H9 Max, and now the H90 - so I wasn’t initially overly taken by the stand-alone Eventide Devices - while I so like the Tricherachorus that I will for sure get more of this series.

The Preset overlay cards are genius - and perfect for pedals which have two layers of controls - i.e. secondary / alt parameters. I’ve always preferred dual concentric pots - and don’t understand why pedal builders don’t make more use of those - versus having to dial the same knob back and forth for different parameters.

This is not exactly a full review - as I haven’t had the pedal long - and I don’t have the benefit of all the nuances that come with time. But I’ve been hugely impressed how easy these are to deploy - even with their hidden parameters - there has to be a smarter was to do that!

The Tricerachorus is actually part of a project on favourite mid-size modulation boxes - and it’s fantastic in delivering Boss DC-2 Dimension style sounds, and Rotary Speaker Emulation - in addition to that 3-Voice Chorus.

Controls - Mode / Mix [Mix Envelope] : Chorus > Vibrato > Chorale, Rate [Rate Envelope], Detune [Pitch], ▽[ALT], Preset : 1-5, Left Depth [Delay, up to 200ms], Centre Depth [Filter], Right Depth [Out Lvl], Active LED Push : Latching / Momentary, Swirl LED Push  : Presets (LED off) / Swirl Off (Red) / Swirl On (Green), Active Footswitch / Bypass / Load Preset, Swirl / Preset Footswitch (depending on mode set on above LED push-button).

Ports - TS / TRS (Stereo) In, TS 1 & 2 (Left & Right) Out, EXP / TRS MIDI, Mini USB, 9V DC [-] 200mA.

Boss DC-2 Settings

Mode / Mix = Chorale - Mix @ 2 o'c, Rate @ 9 o'c, Detune @ 8 o'c, Left, Centre & Right Depths @ 12 o'c, [Delay] @ <15ms (just under 8 o'c), [Filter] @ Flat / Middle, [Out Lvl] @ 1 o'c, Swirl is Off!

Rotary Speaker Settings

Mode / Mid = Vibrato, Rate @ 2 o'c, Detune @ 8 o'c, Left, Centre & Right Depths @ 4 o'c, [Delay] @ 8 o'c, [Filter] @ Flat / Middle, [Out Lvl] @ 2 o'c, Swirl ON!

Both those settings sound pretty decent - I've tweaked them a few times now - but think I can get them even better with time!

5 Factory Presets (per overlay cards) :

  • Tricerachorus
  • Vibrato
  • Fauxverb
  • Slow Flange
  • Tail Delay

All decent presets - a little subtle for me mostly - where I feel the need to up the intensity and depth a touch for all of those - but they're pretty good.

All-in-all a really decent Tri-Chorus / Dimension / Rotary Speaker at the very least - and surprisingly easy to get up to speed!

I got mine for just £199 from Signal Sounds - well worth it! Landed at the same time - but from different dealers are the Asheville Analoger APH-12 Phaser, and the Caroline Guitar Co. Arigato Phaser / Vibrato - so a lot of overlap for Phasing in particular - while each is there as a representative of a different genre!

I'm just waiting for my Freqscene Koldwave to land later this month - to complete that quartet - and fulfil the full article set of 12 - soon after which that rundown article will materiliase!

I will be following that with the Compact Edition - but need to wait for the Sugar Blues Auto-Wah to land. That's already been launched in Japan and the USA, and is currently just waiting on a European CE mark approval - so hopefully not too long away now!
