I visited HSE HQ one week ago - and will be including those pictures in next week’s HSE release post. This Boss Tone take was one of two leather-clad pedals I picked up during my visit.
The main background of the visual is the Japanese Kimono fabric that wraps around the sides and back of the pedal enclosure. Which in my visual looks like an island of flower beds - with the Banksy decal figure about to add further flowers to the vista. I then included a sky of little fluffy clouds to represent the ’Spirit in the Sky’ association of this pedal. This pedal is also frequently associated with Randy California - which I believe was Joe’s main focus for this project - this is very much about recreating that Randy California tone!
It has just 2 controls - Level and Fuzz - with extensive range on both - and where 3 o’c on the Fuzz dial is as searing as I like to get. I typically have the Level dial @ 3 o’c, and the Fuzz dial @ Noon - that delivers the perfect texture and harmonics for me. In fact I usually roll off a little gain via my guitar volume control to give me the most killer tones.

This Fuzz can get very loud and searing if you want it to - where oddly I'm dialling things down a little on this occasion - at it's output is so potent!
The circuit makes use of a fantastic 2N1711 Silicon Metal Can Transistor. I own a few Boss Tone type Fuzzes - and this one is very special. Hello Sailor Joe has a real knack for these visceral and vibrant fuzzes. The two pedals I picked up during my visit are #9 and #10 for me - with the latest of those being launched next week at the same time.
The Boss Tone style Spirit in the Sky Fuzz can be yours for just £250 and equivalent on the Hello Sailor Effects Webstore - only 3 units have been made including mine - so only 2 are up for grabs.
The enclosure is particularly tricky to make - with its intricate mix of leather and kimono fabric. The difficulty of that process means that is unlikely to be repeater in the same way - meaning that these 3 are very special pedals indeed!
Joe has deliberately just made a few of these as he wanted them to be super special and rare - and I feel very privileged to own one!
I expect these to go pretty fast!
