Walrus Audio is next in line for one of my Brand Capsule Collection roundups / rounding exercises! - and as usual I swept up a few more longer-term targets along the way - so that I now own 11 Walruses! The ones I picked up in this latest sweep - included the 385 MKII Dynamic Overdrive, Kangra Filter Fuzz, and Slötvå - the 3 x Preset enhanced short-lived variation of the Slö Shimmer Reverb!
This means that I have just 2 ongoing targets - the fairly recent MKII Voyager Klon Klone, and the just released Xero Polyloooper. I will need to wait a while for deals on those two - obviously the Xero is brand new, and the recent Voyager is still holding to its launch price!
My very first Walrus was the Jupiter Multi-Clip Fuzz - which I swept up during the first foray of he 2018 Year of Fuzz Tone Quest - up until that time I had very few very few fuzzes in the collection - but I then amassed 40 very rapidly - and where there are now near 800 fuzzes in the collection - I’ve come a long way since I picked up the Jupiter!
I’m particularly keen on Walrus’s Gain and Modulation pedals - and of course I favour Compact Enclosure editions. There may be a few more outliers here - for instance I’ve long toyed with getting Walrus’s Iron Horse LM308 Distortion - but have so far had other preferred Rat targets - that one may still happen at some stage.
As always - it’s a case of picking out the best pedals from a brand - to my own preferences and sensibilities. Where size is a key factor, as is full stereo ins and outs for certain modulations and spatial effects. I have had various Walrus targets over the years - while not all of those are necessarily sustained over the long term - as we get new pedals materialising every day - and for instance - I much prefer the Beeetronics Larva and Spaceman Explorer for instance to the Walrus Lilian phaser - that one seems a little under-cooked for me - and is unlikely to enter the collection. But if we get a more extended range version of the Lilian one day - then I might reconsider it!
In any case targets rise and fall all the time - with ever-changing priorities. So that here I would say that the Voyager is a definite! While the Xero Polylooper may end up as a maybe!
All those that haven’t been discontinued are available direct from the Walrus Audio Webstore (for US Customers) - International Customers will need to buy from local dealers!

Controls - Volume, Dry, Gain, Bass, Mode : I Low-Gain Sym Soft / II Low Gain LED / III High-Gain Sym Soft / IV High-Gain LED / V High-Gain Hard Clip, Treble.
Walrus's 5-State Series turned out to be quite significant for me - while not all of these are totally perfect - but all are very decent. I personally would have preferred more tone-controls - say deploy a Tilt-EQ - with various Mids flavours within the different Modes. Each of these is excellent, but I'm not sure they're quite top-tier - unlike say the 385 and Voyager variants. The Ages is a very decent versatile overdrive - with some great sounds onboard.
Controls - Volume, Blend, Gain, Bass, Mode : I Tight Mid-Cut LED Hard / II Tight Mid-Cut Hard Clip / III Dual Clip LED Hard / IV Rhythm Mid-Cut LED Hard, V Rhythm Deeper Mid-Cut Hard Clip. Treble.
The 5-State Distortion - is mostly vintage / 80's inspired - with plenty of Mid-Cut to the output profile - for that particular era of tones - versus the current more modern mids-forward profiles of contemporary distortion pedals! This is a richly textured saturated distortion - but obmiouly somewhat vintage leaning - I really like it!
Controls - Volume, Voltage / Starve : 3V-18V, Gain, Bass, Mode : I Silicon Clip / II Silicon Clip + Bass Boost / III Germanium Clip / IV LED Clip / V LED + Hard + Soft Clip, Treble.
This one is probably the pick of the bunch for me from the 5-State Series - not quite at the level of the Wampler Cryptid - but of that ilk for sure - delivery a variety of classic fuzz flavours.
Controls - Volume A, Gain A, Volume B, Gain B, Treble, Bass, 385 / 385+ Boost Switch, Bypass Footswitch, A/B Channel Footswitch.
The latest edition of this Film Projector Preamp / Overdrive - which has been a long-term target for me. It's in cases like this when you'e very glad to have held out - when a better version of said circuit materialises much later on! The 385 has a gorgeous warm and rounded tonality - and here benefits from dual independent channels, and a pre-gain boost. Sounds every bit as good as I expected.
Controls - Volume, Tone, Gain, Mid ±, Mid Freq. Focus : 350Hz / 550Hz / 2kHz, MODE : I. GE 1N34A / II. GE 1N34A + Bass Boost / III. Symmetric SI / IV. Asymmetric SI / V. Asymmetric SI + Bass Boost, Bypass Footswitch, Mid Footswitch.
This one is fairly recent and there are no discounts being offered - nor any pristine secondhand examples being sold on Reverb.Com or Ebay. I'm a huge fan of Klones - and this is most definitely a key target for me - just need the right opportunity to materialise! I'm definitely down for one of these once the price is right for me!
Controls - Level, Fuzz, Mode : Mid Scoop / Open / Mid Boost Tone, Bass / Cut.
My very first Walrus Audio pedal back in 2018 - a really decent Multi-Clip + EQ Fuzz - in some ways kind of adjacent to Big Muff in its core tonality - really versatile! Probably deserves another outing soon - I do try to give all my pedals semi-regular airings every couple of years or so!
Controls - Sensitivity, Resonance, Volume, Envelope : Frequency, Mids : Scooped / Flat, Modern / Vintage.
This is sort of the quirkier cousin to the Jupiter - requires a little diligence on the dial-in - otherwise it can be a little thin sounding - with the appropriate diligence - you can really get some cool sounding - slightly edgy fuzz tones. The Jupiter is more conventional - and this one is typically a little more of an acquired taste.
Controls - Rate (/10), Depth (/10), Lo-Fi (/10), Left Encoder / Parameters, Centre Encoder / MODES, Right Encode / Lo-Fi Variables, Bypass Footswitch, Tap Tempo / Vinyl Skip Footswitch, Dual Press on both Footswitches scrolls preset within 3 Preset Bank - A/B/C.
Mako II [M1] Alhorithms - Vintage Chorus | Tri-Chorus | Flanger | 2-Stage Phaser | 4-Stage Phaser | Uni-Vibe | Bias Tremolo | Harmonic Tremolo | Pattern Tremolo | Vintage Vibrato | Warped Vinyl | Tape-Vibrato | Full Rotary Leslie | Moving Horn Only | Moving Drum Only | Lowpass Filter | Highpass Filter | Bandpass Filter [x18].
A fantastic Multi-Modulator in this MKII incarnation - which tidies up the algorithms - and beautifully adds a flanger into the mix. I feel this is the best compact multi-modulator out there! Will be interesting to see how Chase Bliss's Lost + Found compares / competes - when that lands in September.
Controls - Rate, Depth, Lag, Divisions : Quarter / Quarter Triplet / Eighth, Shape : Sine / Triangle / Random, Dry-Chorus-Vibrato.
This is another I waited on - and then got the better improved - version - here as a limited edition colourway too - really the perfect pickup, and one of my favourite choruses for sure - most of my favourites here have dual footswitches! The Julianna is simply a better stereo output version of the Julia - if you want a little more extended range - then this is the one you want!
Controls - Volume, Shape : Sine / Square / Ramp Down (Saw) / Ramp Up / Bump / Random, Pan (0 > 180°), Rate, Depth, Standard-Both-Harmonic-Blend, Tap Divisions : Quarter / Quarter Triplets / Eighths / Eighths Triplets / Sixteens, Bypass Footswitch, Tap / Ramp-Up/Down Footswitch, Press Both Footswitches to scroll through 3 Presets, Press Both and Hold to Save Presets.
Another improved Stereo variety - this takes the Monument circuit to new heights - great harmonic tremolo - not quite as good as Spaceman's Delta II or JAM Pedals' Harmonious Monk - but still pretty spectular - with a fantastic extended range control interface.
Controls - Rate, Depth, Sweep (Manual), Feedback, Shape : Sine/Triangle/Random, Voice : Full Frequency/Notched, D-F-V / Dry>Wet : Dry/Flange/Vibrato.
And this is a great Flanger - not quite as flavourful as the Krozz Airborne- but still pretty impressive - really cool enclosure artwork too - probably one of Walrus's finest!
Controls - Decay, Filter, Mix, X Variables, Modes : Dark / Sine, Rise / Warp, Dream / Sink, Depth, Bypass Footswitch, Sustain Footswitch, Quick Press Both to scroll through 3 Presets, Long Press = Save!
And this finally is the 4th of the improved Walrus variants. The Slötvå is simply the preset-enabled version of the Slö shimmery reverb - the best compact version for that format - there is of course the larger format size too - which is no way near as practically versatile as this 3-Presets Reverb. A really neat spin on the Slö - but one that was only available for a short while. I nabbed about the only second-hand variant available in the UK - courtesy of Ebay!
Controls - CHANNEL 1 } Pan 1, Speed : 0.5 / 1x / 2x, Direction : FWD / REV, Volume 1 Slider; CHANNEL 2 } Pan 2, Speed : 0.5 / 1x / 2x, Direction : FWD / REV, Volume 2 Slider; UNIVERSAL } Mode : Synced / Unsynced / Poly, Left Footswitch : Playback / Record - Hold for Undo, Right Footswitch : Stop - Hold for Speed FX, Dual Press Footswitches to switch Channel, Double Hold for Full Stop and Full Erase.
And last but not least - the latest of the Walrus Audio releases - a really smart creative looper - which I certainly like the look of - while I'm not sure I'm desperate enough to pay the full $299 for it. So I will wait for it to come down in price a little before I pounce. I definitely think I want one, but it's not as high a priority as the Voyager - at least not on the current chart - but these things are wont to change!
