Verlie does it again! This is the 4th of her vintage inspired phasers - and each subsequent one seems even better than the excellent ones that came before - I really love all of Verlie’s modulations - which are typified by a warm and lush output profile.
Verlie always tends to use premium vintage / NOS components - and her modulations definitely have that high fidelity sound in common.
I think the Gallstone may be my favourite of the PastFX Phasers - where the Kurt’s Cologne is still my favourite Chorus, and the 80/A is my favourite Flanger - while all of those are quite brilliant really. The below ’Queen of Modulation’ is probably the most killer selection of Modulations out there - I don’t think anyone does these overall as well as Verlie.
External Controls - Mix, Range : ↑ Stock (faster) / ↓ Slow LFO Sweeps, Rate, Feedback, Mini Level, 8-way Width Rotary Control : Position #8 is ’Color’, Voice : Feedback Network A/B variant, Stages : 2 / 4, Expand : High ’Q’ All-Pass Filter.
Ports : TS In, TS Out, 9V DC [-] 80mA.
Internal Controls - Max Feedback Trimmer.
I really like most everything about this variant - and it’s largely super easy to dial in. As with most of my preferred modulations - I always lean into the fuller flavour - with the Mix / Intensity set fairly high.
All the options work well here - while most of the options are mostly set to the ↑ Up Position for me - including the Range, Voice, and Expand controls.
I really love both the 2 Stage and 4 Stage Mode options - where probably overall I’ve leant more into the 2 Stages.
There’s plenty of range and variability here - and the output can get somewhat distorted if you crank up the Level and Feedback. I think this may be my favourite of Verlie’s Phasers - while I really love her Classic Phase too. This Gallstone is full of verve!
Preferred Settings : Mix @ 3 o’c, Range : ↑ Faster, Rate @ 3 o’c, Feedback @ Noon, Level @ Noon, Width @ 8 o’c mostly - but varies, Voice : Feedback Network Variant ↑ Up typically, Phase 2 mostly - both are great, Expand : High ’Q’ All Pass Filter on ↑ Up.
The PastFX Webstore should be close to reopening now - where the Gallstone typically goes for $203 and equivalent on the PastFX Reverb.com Store.
