The original presumably Opamp Muff Mod happened in 1998 - so it’s a rare treat to get your hands on that circuit now!
The Doom Hammer is prized for its less pronounced scoop, thick yet tighter low end, and more playback uniformity and reliability as the original mod could be somewhat unruly.
It doesn’t state so emphatically - but this is surely a modded Opamp Big Muff - where Jeorge has markedly evolved the original pedal’s output profile - for more consistent dial-in!
You have the very standard 3-knob topology of Output, Tone, and Fuzz - very much Big Muff style territory. And the demos sound pretty decent - while I have been caught out by such before. Most of these demos are done as single pedal playthroughs - while you don’t get any clues as to how universal the pedal’s output is.
In fact I was a little disappointed by the Way Huge Stone Burner - which has some great demos, but the real experience was noway near as impressive - where in a head-to-head with the Redbeard Honey Badger - the Badger kind of blew it out of the water - every aspect of the Badger was significantly better - but the Stone Burner Demo sound nigh perfect - evidently the amp was doing a great deal of the lifting there - or else the Stone Burner is not particularly suitable for clean pedal platform solutions like mine. Wile everything I to is comparative - I’ve had enough pedals through my hands not to nigh instantly determine which pedals are top tier - and which leave something to be desired.
I have a number of favoured OpAmp Muff’s already - and by and large those are some of my favourite Muff circuits - even though I mostly tend to favour Triangle and Violet Ram’s Head varieties - alongside the Japanese Sustainars!
So I have high hopes for the Doom Hammer - it’s definitely on my radar - while I will need to do further triangulation and analysis - to determine whether this is nice-to-have or a must- buy! Jury is kind of out on that result currently - but we will get to a decision eventually - and currently it seems more likely than not - in any case I’m always open to persuasion. What do you think of my ’High Strike Hammer’ visual?
The Doom Hammer is a $169 in the USA / Sweetwater - while Jim Dunlop products always seem to take a while to reach the UK - I tend to check in on Andertons for most of the big brand operators! They have the Doom Hammer down as £182.99 - and not due to land in stock until the very last day of October! Same date that those recent EHX pedals seem to have! Possibly it’s all coming over in the same container!
Dunlop Pedals / Products are typically available for orders immediately upon launch in the USA - while we Brits are made to wait a month or more. Many brands coordinate global shipping for launch - and have product in all key territories - which is why I find it so odd that we are at least a month behind the Americans. UK builders make their pedals instantly available to everyone - while I’m increasingly told by American Brands that they don’t sell to UK Customers - I’ve missed out on a number of pedals that way - and especially for custom and limited editions.
The vast majority wait for things to come into stock locally - while time is always of the essence for me - I need to be cutting edge - and on the cusp of when the story breaks - or I start to loose credibility. Seems like ’America First’ has been happening for a while longer than we thought!
In any case this Pounding OpAmp Fuzz sounds pretty formidable - while I’ve yet to decide on what priority this will be for me!
