So I’ve had my eye on Ghost Note Audio for a while - where the main principal seems to be of Icelandic descent - his name - Valdemar Erlingsson is very Icelandic, and I see he’s been educated at the University of Iceland. Valdemar is usually written ’Valdimar’ but both are valid.

In any case - Valdemar has been delivering some killer pedals to-date - mostly of the larger preamp pedal variety - and all those are analog of course. I love how some of those sound - but consider them to be somewhat on the larger side to be deployed practically.

For someone who likes a lot of different flavours on the board - I obviously tend to gravitate towards more compact effects units. So it’s just as well that Ghost Note have a new Deadalus Series of Digital Effects. Those enclosure are quite distinct at 83mm (3.25”) x 125mm (5”) x 55mm (2.15”) this compares to a typical 1590BB at 94mm (3.7") x 120mm (4.7") x 38mm (1.5 inches) - a tiny bit taller but slimmer therefore - a really decent format / size.

One of the most unusual things about this series - is that each Edition shares exactly the same chassis / format. And you can buy each of the 3 different - or additional faceplates for £20 each - and then just update the firmware! So you can just switch around the same device - or buy those individuall made up!

What we have here is an original ’3 Bit Fuzz’ - Bitcrusher / Distortion - with a wide variety of output textures - which I have summed up in the visual. I will go into a little further detail below - mostly about the Control Parameters and Effects / Programs onboard.

The second pedal is the Amverb 80’s Rack Style Reverberator - that one I believe is likely somewhat based on the UA AMS RMX16 - I’m sure I will be corrected if I got that one wrong. This one has the key parameters pre-programmed across 8 Banks of 8 Programs each.

And then the 3rd offering is based on a series of 80’s Rack Effects - which I think are somewhat modelled on the Yamaha SPX90 - as popularised by Michael Landau. And consisting of a Tri-Stereo Chorus, a Micro-Pitch-Shifter Detune, and a VCA style Compressor.

All 3 units are available separately from the Ghost Note Audio Webstore for just £150 each - a great price for this level of quality. And as mentioned you can buy just one unit and additional Faceplates for £20 each - so you can have the full set in just one device - where you change the Faceplate to a different variant - and update the firmware each time you want to experience another set of Effects. No doubt there will be more variants for this Deadalus Series available in he not too disnat future. A really smart roll-out - giving maximum flexibility to the customer.

I’m hoping to get my hands on one or two of these eventually - would be great to get some hands-on with those effects. Valdemar is a very fine studio / electronic engineer - with a seemingly great ear for sound. I felt he deserved a showcase on this site.

Further details on each below.

3 BIT FUZZ - Bitcrusher / Distortion - £150

close

Origin and provenance not known here  - I believe it's an original effect - and hence my top pick here!

Controls - Low [Scoop], Mid [Curve], High [Shift]. Gain [Gate]. Tone, Volume, Shape : Bitcrusher / Hard-Clipper, MODE : 1-8 / [ALT], Phase : In / Out, Preset Footswitch, Active Footswitch.

Ports - USB-C, Left / 1 Input, 9V DC [-] 100mA, Left / 1 Output, Right / 2 Output, MIDI, EXP.

MODES

  1. Balanced sound with each band clearly filtered both pre- and post distortion
  2. More aggressive sound with tighter bass response
  3. Each band is kept very narrow, resulting in a very resonant sound, similar to a cocked wah pedal
  4. Similar to no. 3 but frequency bands are set lower
  5. Same split frequencies as Mode 1, but pre-distortion filters are disabled
  6. Same split frequencies as Mode 1, but post-distortion filters are disabled on the Mid and High bands
  7. Very tight low end with crunchier mid tones, and less fizz
  8. Buzzy, bitcrushed fuzz galore

AMVERB 80's Rack Style Reverberator (UA AMS RMX16 ?) - £150

close

I feel this one's based on he UA AMS RMX16 - that seems to be the most obvious likely original source of Rack-style Reverb modelled here!

This one is interesting in that the Programs contain the key core values for EQ and Timing - we don't have any granular access to Decay or Pre-Delay - all those settings are essentially pre-programmed.

Controls - Input, Mix, Output, Low Shelf EQ [Low Shelf Corner Frequency], Program 1-8 (per Bank), High Shelf EQ [High Shelf Corner Frequency], Tails : Off / On, Bank : 1-8 / [ALT], Stereo : Off : On, Preset 1 / 2 Footswitch, Active Footswitch.

Ports - USB-C, Left / 1 Input, 9V DC [-] 100mA, Left / 1 Output, Right / 2 Output.

I'm pretty sure the SWIRLS is based on the Yamaha SPX90 - that seems the likeliest candidate that covers off all those effects!

Tri-Stereo Chorus } Rate, Input, Mix, Manual } On/Off, Left, Centre, Right

Detune Micro Pitch-Shifter } Voices, Detune, Mix

VCA-style Compressor } Ratio, Threshold, Attack
