So this is the newest edition of many people’s favourite dual-overdrive - which is steadily moving to a position of maximum appeal for me. We have a number of extended control switches added in this new edition - one external toggle-switch for the Blue Bluesbreaker style Left Channel, and 3 internal ones for the Green Nobels ODR-1 style Right Channel.
The 3-way Hi-Cut first appeared on the Carbon Dual Bluesbreaker style Overdrive - and is now standard on the V4 Protein edition.
I don’t understand why Browne Amplification could not copy the playbook of Xotic Effects and King Tone - who both pioneered externalising those formerly internal dip-switches. I don’t see why they could not have externalised at least one of those internal ones - say the Low Cut switch - to balance the interface.
That said - this latest version has several improvements over its predecessors - which really reinforce its credentials - and add range and versatility to the cored dual-channel overdrive.
I’ve already mentioned the external control, and we have 3 additional internal controls too for the ODR-1 style Green channel - as follows :
External Controls - Right Green Side } Level, Drive, Tone, ODR-1 type Footswitch, Left Blue Side } Level, Gain, 3-way Hi-Cuy, Tone, Bluesbreaker type Footswitch.
The V4 Protein Dual Drive goes for $349 on the Browne Amplification Webstore - and should be at international dealers imminently too. The different colour stripes of the visual indicate the 6 colourways that the Protein comes in - obviously the standard Green one, and then Black, White, Copper, Gold, and Pink - as pictured.
I really like those white knobs - which currently only come with the Pink Edition. I’ve seen them on a previous White edition too - which looks supper cool also - I seem to prefer those white knobs over the default Dumble-style ones - I just feel they look more elegant - and tone better with the different Tone knobs!
I typically favour single / compact enclosure extended range overdrives and dual-overdrives - indeed like the recent Chase Bliss Brothers AM - while I do also like these mid-size types on occasion. I would really want all those internal switches externalised in some way (possibly via Mods) - a la Xotic and King Tone - as mentioned. For that route is far more accessible and practical. I don’t really like needing to screw off the backplate to continually access certain output controls!
For many the best dual overdrive on the market just got even better!
