Asheville’s 4th pedal creation is the Analoger APH-12 12-Stage Phaser - another really impressive analog modulation device following the superb ADG-1 Analog Delay, ACV-1 Analog Chorus / Vibrato, and AFG-1 Analog Flanger.

Those are all really high-fidelity devices with added range and features, and a smart upper dial to set the Expression per parameter.

There’s definitely much to like here - while this device is on the larger side of things in dimensions and price. In fact these go for $397 on the Asheville Webstore, and £419 in the UK - including at my friend Joe Light’s Joe’s Pedals.

I’m still kind of in the honeymoon period for my Beetronics Larva Dual Morphing Phaser - which goes for $249 / £192. So for me in the UK the Asheville APH-12 is essentially more than twice the price! Not that it seems to have impacted the rollout, as it’s already sold out in most places - with just 2 still in stock at Andertons. The pricing does seem rather on the steeper side!

Controls - Expression : Sweep / Ressonance / Rate / Amount, Sweep, Resonance, Rate, Amount, Mix : 50% / 75% / 100%, Drive, Stages : 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 9 / 12, Modulaiton : Slow LFO / Fast LFO / Envelope Followed Modulation.

I really like the features and output of this device - and having 8 different Stage settings - from 1 to 12 is immense - as is the inclusion of Drive and Resonance - which make such a big impact on the Beetronics Larva too.

The Larva is the more practical take for me - I love the ability to ramp up the Modulation Rate on the fly. The APH-12 is not quite so dynamic - while it’s really expansive - particularly in the intensity of its Phase Stages.

I do really like this device, but it is unlikely to unseat my Beetronics Larva any time soon. It definitely goes onto the wishlist - and if I do decide to get one - it will be somewhat opportunistically - as that price is pretty high for me. And yes I know the average Chase Bliss pedal is around the same level (slightly less) - the form factor for that is much more practical and usable for me.

This is a very well-engineered and very well specified device with a really expansive output. Would that it were a touch smaller, and a touch less expensive. It’s going to take a lot of justification to get this one at the £419 mark. It’s obviously very well engineered, but is undoubtedly pricey!

Of course there seem to be plenty for whom the high price doesn’t factor as these have sold through very well already.

I don’t have any Asheville pedals yet - and this is the mostly likely of those for me - while I also really like the AFG-1 Flanger - that still remains something of a target. Cool devices for sure.
