So I’ve actually long favoured Wampler’s Mini Compressors. As the original Mini EGO was on the board for a good couple of years or so - before I upgraded to more granular and extended range varieties. The Mini EGO followed on from the Modified Xotic Effects SP Compressor - and for sure I preferred the Mini EGO at that time - and it served me well. Its controls are somewhat different - Blend, Sustain, Tone Switch, Volume, Attack Switch. With a 3-way Tone control essentially in place of a 3-Way Release switch on the Mini EGO 76.
Of course since the original Mini EGO the Mini Compressor competition has significantly heated up. With strong candidates now from Becos FX, Effects Bakery, EHX, Fairfield Circuitry, JHS, Keeley, Malekko, Mooer, MXR, Pigtronix, TC Electronic, and Tone City - to name but a few. I’m reminded ha I should probably to a rundown on Mini Compressors soon!
Mini EGO 76 Controls - Blend, Comp, Atack : Fastest / Slowest / Moderate, Level, Release : Fastest / Slowest / Moderate.
So really you just have a 3-way Release switch here, in place of the 3-way Tone switch on the original Mini Ego.
I’ve always liked having a tone control on compressors - while for miniaturisation you will always need to make compromises. So you have the greater granularity of Attack and Release on the Mini EGO 76 - versus the 3-way tone switch on the original Mini Ego.
Pricing here is $149 for the Mini EGO 76 versus the compact edition @ $199 - per the Wampler Webstore. Wampler really has a very healthy Compressor offering currently - with 5 models now, and including its priciest Cory Wong Compressor Edition - @ $269.
You’ve certainly never before had so many choices for Compression. Where some of those Minis are very much at the same level as their significantly larger compact edition cousins. And some of those compact ones are sort of the equivalent to a full studio rack!
It’s not a priority for me so much - but I would be nice to own both the Wampler Mini Compressors. While I probably have some other priorities in that area.
Very nicely done though - I feel these will do very well for Brian!
